As we celebrate Seniors Month this June, the Region of Peel and Peel Senior Link are highlighting how community hub models are supporting an aging population. These hubs help older adults stay active, connected, and engaged in their communities while providing easier access to integrated health and wellness services that support independence and well-being.
Through initiatives like the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor, the Crossroads Village Café, and the Creditvale Mills Community Wellness Hub, older adults can access integrated supports that improve quality of life, support caregivers, and help seniors remain in their homes longer. While these hubs offer important health and wellness services year-round, throughout the summer, they come alive with programs geared towards keeping seniors active and engaged in their communities.
“Hub care models like those led by PSL and our partners are shaped by the people and communities they serve,” says Sean Weylie, COO at Peel Senior Link. “Because they evolve with the needs of the community, they are uniquely positioned to provide both individualized support and broader community impact. By connecting seniors to services in their homes and neighbourhoods, we can help older adults age in place, prevent hospitalizations, and support older adults in aging with dignity.”
The Seniors Health and Wellness Village (SHWV) at Peel Manor is a one-of-a-kind centre that combines a 177-bed long-term care centre designed for emotion-based care with a main-floor hub offering vital, integrated supports, including primary care, neuro-behavioural care, nutrition planning, social services, and hairdressing.
“Community hubs like the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor are intentionally designed to bring people, care, and connection together in one place,” said Leigh-Anne Marquis, Manager, Integrated Care, Peel Region. “When services are integrated into welcoming, everyday spaces, it reduces barriers, strengthens relationships, and helps older adults feel supported clinically, socially, and emotionally. These environments play a critical role in helping people remain independent and connected to their community.”
The SHWV is also home to the Crossroads Village Café and Shop, a social enterprise operated by Peel Senior Link in partnership with Peel Region and Punjabi Community Health Services. The Café provides affordable, nutritious meals, and a welcoming space for social connection.
Peel Senior Link also oversees the Creditvale Mills Community Wellness Hub in partnership with more than fourteen community organizations. Located between two affordable housing buildings for seniors and families, the Hub fosters multigenerational connection through arts, recreation, wellness, educational, and social programming. Throughout the summer, residents and community members will be able to participate in activities that promote healthy activity and social connection, including fitness classes, creative workshops, community barbeques, and social clubs.
The Hub is one of the sites of PSL’s mobile Seniors’ Active Living Centre, which expands access to activities and essential supports across Mississauga and Brampton to help seniors stay active, engaged, and connected. The SALC will be running a special Seniors Month program calendar throughout the month of June, available at PSL’s partner sites.
“The Hub made my life so much easier,” says Everton, a 63-year-old Creditvale Mills Community Wellness Hub member who survived a brain injury ten years ago. “Workshops on learning about healthy eating, how to control my blood pressure, how to manage stress – it has improved my life a lot.”
As Ontario approaches “super-aged” status (where more than 20 percent of the population is over 65), communities are increasingly turning to integrated care models that support aging at home. As we move into summer, these community hubs across Peel Region continue to demonstrate how local partnerships can create welcoming spaces where older adults can build friendships, access supports, stay active, and enjoy healthier, more connected lives close to home.
