Dorothy’s Journey of Family, Community, and Independence

Dorothy Houghton has lived a life shaped by resilience, hard work, and a deep sense of community.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario in 1922, she recalls that her childhood was once “filled with fun, love, music, and security.” But everything changed when she was just 10 years old and her father suddenly passed away. Two years later, her mother died from cancer, leaving six children to face the world on their own.

Dorothy says what mattered most during that time was that, “with the help of the Salvation Army, we were all able to stay together as a family in our own home.”

During the Second World War, Dorothy worked at General Electric to support the war effort while her three brothers enlisted. In the years that followed, she married, raised five children, divorced her husband, and built a career, working during the day at a glass factory while attending school at night to earn a bookkeeping certificate. That determination eventually led to a 20-year career at Coopers & Lybrand.

Later in life, Dorothy and her second husband ran a convenience store in Toronto, and she dedicated many years to volunteering with veterans and community programs.

The Importance of Community

“After only 10 years of marriage, my husband suddenly passed away. I then became very active in volunteering for the Bloor-Central Salvation Army Corps, helping with the “Moms & Tots” program. I taught crafts to young mothers to get them out of the house so they could socialize with other mothers.”

She also embraced opportunities to travel, visiting places such as Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and Fiji.

“My fondest memory is the time I spent at home with my children,” Dorothy shares. “There was much love, joy, and frustration in raising five children, primarily on my own, but I loved every minute of it. Many have asked how I have reached the age of 94. I think laughter, friends, and strong family ties have kept me going through some of the most difficult times of my life.”

The Support to Carry on Living Independently

Today, with the support of Peel Senior Link, Dorothy continues to enjoy independence, connection, and peace of mind in the home she loves.

“I became a client of Peel Senior Link when I moved in, and I know that without their assistance and care, I would not have been able to stay in my own home. I have many friends here and love the apartment that I now call home.

The Personal Support Workers I have are all wonderful—we share a lot of laughter, good conversation, and music. My days are filled with peace and security, knowing that I can call on them whenever I need help.

Thank you, Peel Senior Link, for taking such good care of me. My children do not have to worry about me, and for that, I am grateful.”
